Overhydration & Safety: How Much Is Too Much?
Water is essential, but drinking very large volumes very quickly can be dangerous. The issue is usually dilution of blood sodium (hyponatremia), not simply “too much water” spread across a whole day.
Practical guardrails
- Avoid repeatedly drinking more than about 1 L per hour for long periods without electrolytes.
- Listen to thirst and take breaks instead of chugging continuously.
- If you have kidney, heart, or liver conditions or take diuretics, follow medical advice.
Signs to watch
- Headache, nausea, or confusion. Seek medical help if symptoms are severe.
